Flavio Cipolla beats Andreas Haider-Maurer to enter semi-final – Loughborough Challenger 2011
The quarterfinals of the men’s singles competition at the 2011 AEGON Loughborough Challenger continued on November 11, 2011 in a match featuring Flavio Cipolla (Italy) and Andreas Haider -Maurer (Austria). The Italian won the match
6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
In the first set, both players delivered an ace each. Cipolla did not concede any double fault while Haider-Maurer had one. They were playing the quarterfinals and the stakes were high, that is why they were not too aggressive
with their service games, and did not score more than an ace each in the first set.
The Italian, ranked at the 80th place in the world, had a first serve winning ratio of 70% while Haider-Maurer had a rate of 61%. The Italian won 71% points from his first serve but his statistics reduced as he could
win 67% points from his second serve.
Haider-Maurer, on the other hand, won 64% points from his first serve and his statistics reduced as he could win only 57% points from his second serve.  
Cipolla did not give any opportunity to Haider-Maurer to break his serves. That is why the Italian had a flawless service game run in the first set. Haider-Maurer was not too successful with his service games as he saved four out
of the five breakpoints he faced.
The Italian was not playing any unneeded shots, which is why he did not concede any double fault nor let Haider-Maurer break any of his serves. Cipolla won the first set 6-4.
As the second set began, the Italian was looking to play on his back foot. He could not deliver any ace in the set and conceded a double fault once. Haider-Maurer was trying to equalize the match as he was playing confident shots.
He scored two aces and conceded a double fault.
The Austrian had a 68% first serve winning ratio, which was lower than Cipolla’s 74% rate. But Haider-Maurer had a near flawless run when he won 93% points from his first serves. Cipolla could not utilize his serves much, as he
could only win 48% points from his first serve.Haider-Maurer declined greatly with his second serve as he could only win 29% points.
Cipolla managed to win 50% points from his second serve. The Italian was showing some defensive play in the second set, which is why he could not narrow down the lead, which Haider-Maurer had created in the early goings of the
second set.
The Italian was not able to play his service games effectively as he could save three breakpoints out of the five he faced. On the other hand, Haider-Maurer played all his service games with ease and did not let Cipolla break any
of his serves. The Austrian won the second set 6-2.
When the match entered into the third set, both players were hoping to win the set and enter the semi finals of the tournament. Cipolla did not play any aggressive shots and had a controlled game play. He did not concede any ace
but he got too defensive and conceded double faults twice in the set.
The Italian was barley ahead of Haider-Maurer as the Austrian was gaining on him. However, Cipolla restricted Haider-Maurer on five games as he won the third set 7-5 and qualified for the semi finals of the 2011 AEGON Loughborough
Challenger.
