Flavio Cipolla gusts away Diego Junqueira to qualify for round two – Estoril Open 2012
World number 70, Flavio Cipolla of Italy, defeated the 31-year-old Argentine competitor, Diego Junqueira, to book a spot in the second round draws of the Estoril Open on Tuesday. He finished off the business in straight sets 6-1,
6-4 rounding off in just a fraction over an hour and 20 minutes.
Junqueira looked a bit worn out right from the start. He was missing his first serves on most of the occasions and never looked be in control of his returns; lost the opening serve game and again failed to hold serve in the third
game. A small cameo helped him to recover one breakpoint but luck refused to take his side and forced him to lose another serve game in the fifth game. Scores moved on to 4-1 in favour of the eighth seed Italian.
No serve holds for the Italian veteran helped his 28-year-old Argentine competitor to bag the opening set with ease. If it was not for that lucky breakthrough in the fourth game, the Italian would have faced an embarrassing bagel.
Swaps of breakthroughs were witnessed at the start of the second set. Both players held their serves in the following two games before Cipolla held his serve and coupled it with a breakthrough to take the lead of 4-2.
No breakpoints in the following two games kept the lead of the Argentine intact and despite a breakthrough for the Italian in the ninth game, the eighth seed Italian won the 10th game and registered a thumping triumph
over his opponent.
Cipolla won seven of the allotted 11 breakpoints and bagged 68 points of 117 total played. He failed to register any ace; committed a couple of double faults and was unable to fire in the first serves accurately. However, his opponent
made his life easier by committing a whole lot of unforced errors; managing to convert just three of the allotted seven breakpoints and registering a poor first and second serve conversion rate.
Flavio Cipolla is scheduled to go head-to-head against the Daniel Munoz-De La Nava of Spain who defeated is compatriot, Javier Marti, in straight sets to move ahead. Other successful first round winners on Tuesday included the
likes of Inigo Cervantes, Ivan Navarro, Rui Machado, Bjorn Phau and Joao Sousa. There were no major upsets witnessed and every seeded player has successfully marched ahead with the top seed Argentine tennis ace, Juan Martin Del Potro, set to play his first
match against Machado on Wednesday.
