Fleas- Please help!?

Fleas, need advice!! (kind of long)?

Between my room mate, my boyfriend, and myself our home seems to have been taken over by fleas! We have two indoor cats and one small dog.

I know what advice I will get first hand- and thats get frontline or advantage. I know...my animals have been covered every month since we have gotten them!..so I have been taking the right precautions.

We didn't realize we had the tiny bloodsuckers as bad as we do until today though. For ten hours straight my room mate and I changed all linens and did ALOT of laundry. We used borax for the furniture and we mixed salt and bleach in a spray bottle and sprayed EVERY single baseboard in our apartment! We mopped with bleach and we vacuumed the entire place numerous times, including the furniture!

The problem is...we continued to find fleas on the animals. They received their advantage two days ago- why isn't it working? Plus, they have been covered monthly!!

Could our apartment be infested or what are we doing wrong?!? Pleeeeassseee help- this is very gross and I feel like a bad owner :(

Please give as much detail as possible and the more answers the better. Thank you to all in advance!

  1. Talk to your vet and get a flea bomb.  Bathe your pets and then remove them for a bit while the bomb goes off.  Since your pets are on advantage it should help them witht the fleas.  You can also just buy flea powder for the time being for them until it's safe to go inside your flat again.  A flea bomb is the only way to get rid of fleas and the eggs.  Anything else only removes the fleas, then the eggs hatch.

You are not a bad owner.  Fleas happen.  Just one flea on a pet can reproduce into multiple fleas within days.  My dad had fleas once, and it was bad.  He called his bug person who came in and exterminated them all.  That's also a good idea if the bomb doesn't work.  Pet store and WalMart bombs don't work, as they only kill the fleas and not the eggs.

So, either get a vet bomb or a bug guy.  It's your only way out of this.

  2. it's expensive but yes you're apartment is infested and they are jumping from your pets, to you, your roomate, the furniture and the carpet. Treating only your pets won't help at this point. You need to bomb your apt and aggressively cuz unhatched fleas can remain dormant for up to 3 years. Buy foggers to fog your apartment, buy flea powder for carpets. wash all of your linens and put them in plastic bags ( so fleas can't jump back on them. All in one day u need to powder the carpets, follow the directions of the foggers and fog the apt and take your pets to get a flea dip, or do it yourself. You need to get rid of all of the fleas at once or the problem will never go away.

  3. I myself have 5 dogs and I know what your going through, we had an infestation of fleas and it was unreal! We tried everything and what seemed to work the best was I first gave them Capstar it's a pill that kills all the adult fleas living on the animal, I then waited 24 hours and gave them all baths with dawn dish soap it seems to choke out any left over fleas, then we fogged our home with flea bombs. This brought it to a minimum, now of course my dogs go outside and pick up fleas so I continue to give them a bath as often as possible with the dawn dish soap and then I use a flea spray on them that I picked up at the local grocery store that can be used every few days. I spent so much money on this problem in the past and couldn't believe how well the dawn dish soap worked. It's a lot of work in the beginning to eliminate the fleas but once you catch up with them and continue to bath them and comb them it will become much easier, at least it has for us and my baby's. I hope that this has helped.
