Question:

Fleas and flea traps.?

I had a cat but had to get rid of him a few weeks ago. When we had our cat I really didn't notice any fleas but now that he is gone they are biting us. My poor daughter, who is still crawling, was getting bit like crazy. So we sent her to her grandma's two days ago so we could get rid of the problem. We were going to bomb the house, but really didn't want to use the poison (seeing how she is going to be crawling on the floor). So we stripped all our bedding and washed it, vacuumed the couches, chairs, bed and floors really well and threw all of her plush toys in the dryer just in case they had fleas on them. Before I would have been bitten at least 10 times by this time today, but have only been bitten twice. I want to bring my daughter home today but really want to make sure these things stay off of her. Will flea traps work?? How do you make them and will they keep the fleas from biting her? Should I use some kind of powder on my carpets and couches? Is there something that is non-toxic to humans but kills fleas? I really want to get rid of this problem but don't want there to be any chance that my daughter will be harmed.

Thanks for the help!!!

  1. First of all, make sure you THROW OUT the vacuum bag !! It is a perfect incubator for fleas. You are absolutely correct in being concerned about what you put on your carpet and floors, especially with a child. Many pesticides for fleas contain growth regulators. There has not been sufficient testings on the effect of these growth inhibitors on humans. Don't use them. Don't. My advice would be to use boric acid on your carpets. You can find it at any Do-it-yourself pest control outlet.. Do not use it on wood or tile flooring. Only carpeted areas. ON all non carpeted areas use Lysol floor cleaner or Mr Clean. Make sure and mop right up to the edges of the baseboard. The fleas are attacking you and your husband because their primary meal is gone. The cat.The eggs will continue to hatch, but the boric acid will kill them before they have a chance to reproduce. Boric acid kills insects by dehydrating them. It works and is safe for humans. Good luck!
