Question:

Fleas from Dog Sitter?

My 7 month old puppy has never had fleas and I always have given her the Advantix treatment every 30 days to prevent them. I went to the Cape last week and left her with a friend (who has 2 cats) and tonight i just noticed a flea jumping on me in bed (not a baby flea either, it was a decent sized one). If I already have her on advantix, what are my options? Will they all just die off since she is currently on it or do I have to give her special bathing treatments and bomb the house too? I thought Advantix was a preventative treatment, i guess it didn't work too well!

Thanks in advance!

  1. It is more of a repellent.  It might not eliminate all fleas, just as a mosquito repellent does not eliminate all mosquito bites.  The fact the flea left you dog further underscores the fact that the repellent is working.  Fleas can not survive for long without a host, so there is no need to Nuke the house.

Give it a few days, and if the problem does not go away consult a veterinarian.

  2. As a repellent it seems to be working, the flea left the dog and landed on YOUR bed. (lol)  I lean more toward the proactive approach.  I would bath my dog in flea shampoo, wash dog bedding in bleach and bomb the house.  It really isn't that difficult to stay ahead of the problem and it certainly beats the alternative!

You might suggest to your dog sitter that they use some sort of preventative on the cats, even if it is just a simple flea collar from Walmart.  I'm sure the cats would appreciate being flea free too! Good luck.
