Question:

Fleece bedding for a guinea pig???

I have just adopted two guinea pigs. As I was searching the net I found that a lot of cages are lined with fleece. Why fleece? Do you have to change it more often than other types of bedding, and what about the urine smell. Wouldn't that make it worse?

  1. I have used flece for my guinea pigs for the past 3 years.  My husband is allergic to the guinea pigs, pine, AND hay, so I had to cut back on the allergens where I could.  What I do is put 2 layers of newspaper underneath, a layer of polar no-pill fleece (not the sheepskin kind) on top, then the guinea pigs and their hay & food and whatnot.  Every other day, I take everything out of the cage, shake the fleece onto the newspaper, then roll up the newspaper and throw it in the trash.  I then wash the bottom and sides of the cage with a 50% vinegar & water solution & remake the cage.

I have enough fleece to have 2 weeks worth of changes, which when they are all dirty, I shake them again outside to get the hair and stray poops off, then fill the washer.  I wash with a normal amount of detergent, add in some oxyclean, and occasionally use a cup full of vinegar if they seem extra smelly (NO fabric softener - it causes the pee to stay on top of the fleece instead of soak down underneath).  I then dry the fleece in the dryer, which takes out all the hair from the fleece (note: I have to empty the lint trap twice during this process).

  2. i am watching my class guinea pig for the summer and the bedding i use is deodorizing pine shavings with baking soda but i have to clean the cage every week

  3. Fleece just works well I guess, and you can get it in like a million colours and it's cheap. You need to have a lot of news paper or puppy pads underneath it if you're cavy's aren't litter trained yet though. and then you can just pick up all the little pellets every 2 days or so and then once a week throw the fleece in the washer and hang it out to dry. If you're going to use fleece you need to make sure you have two of the same amount of fabric though. so you can stick one in while the other's being washed.

  4. yes it would make the smell worse use hay

  5. You just have to spot clean and wash the fleece. Cheaper than buying bedding and less messy
