Fleites surname country of origin?

I was looking through my family genealogy and found an ancestor of mine from Cuba with the last name Fleites. Does anyone know what country that name originated from? Is it Spain like I've been told from family or is it from another European country? I've been looking all through the internet to make sure but have so far found nothing.

  1. Oh MAN! That's my mum's third or fourth last name I believe. We're Cuban as well. lol, sorry if I freaked you out. I can't help much but I hear the Fleites in my family came from Spain as well. Hey there cousin, lmao...just kidding.

  2. Spanish: probably a variant of Portuguese Freitas.

Portuguese and Galician: habitational name from any of the numerous places named Freitas, or a topographic name for someone who lived on a patch of stony ground, from Portuguese (pedras) freitas ‘broken stones’, Late Latin (petrae) fractae. Compare Fragoso.
