My girlfriend wants to be a flight attendant. We are moving to Nashville for my job, so the airport is close. i think ive heard some things about how attendants are always away. is this true? I mean, we dont have kids, but i would kind of like to see her lol. i can sacrifice a little so she can have a chanc at her dream. we have been in a long distance relationship for two yars now, so we know we can handle it, but its definitely not what we want our lives to be after we're married you know

  1. Just because the airport is close doesn't actually help all that much.  Airlines typically tell you where you will be based when you first start out.  You may have a little bit of an option, but not much.  This doesn't mean she can't be a flight attendant....as many f/a's commute by way of airplane to get to work.  The problem with this is that your flight benefits are all stand-by, and typically go in seniority order.  With as many people that are commuting now, in addition to many cutbacks on flights by the airlines, it's just going to make it harder than it already is to commute.  The next problem, right now anyways, is that with the cutbacks of flights, come the cutbacks of employees.  Many airlines are currently furloughing (laying off) their f/a's right now.  Even if she does find an airline that is hiring right now...there is no telling how long she would actually have the job for.

That said, many married people are f/a's and seem to make it work.  Yes, you can be away from home a lot...but that doesn't mean it's not possible.  If it's something she really wants to do, then I say give it a try!  It's definitely a different lifestyle, but I personally enjoy it!

  2. She will not be away all the time. It really depends on what airline she works for.

Some airlines take advantage, which is not very nice at all.

They want the person to work hours THEY say and overtime and the pay is not fair.

    but thats only some airlines.

Most airlines give fair wadges and fair times. and give as many days off as they do ask people to work.

Air cabin crew is a great job.

  3. Being a flight attendant is not a bad jpb once you get there that is! It takes a minimum of 8 weeks at what ever airline you choose to work with and they send you to the school in what ever city they are based out of. American is in Ft Worth and Continental is in Houston United is in Denver,... So you will have an initial 8 weeks away, it's kind of like dorm living and 8 hrs of trainng with week ends off. The campus is staffed and has activities (pool) and other goodies but you ususally leave for the weekend and party. And once your degreed so to speak they send yu to what ever or where ever they need you for atlest one year. Then once you've made it you can bid on flights contingenient on shere you live and all that. It's not as easy as it seems unless you are single and or are able to move around a bit for a few years. Plus the deduct pay for the first $1000 for unifors out of ur meager check, There no the best paying jobs to start out with, as it does get better with senority! Good Luck! I worked for CO and it  was hard!
