  1. I can partially answer...

I've done Atlanta-Phuket a handful of times. I usually stop in Seoul, once Tokyo an once Hong Kong. Then Bangkok. Then a short flight to Phuket. Most flights on this path from the US arrive late at night and you would need to spend a night in Bangkok before moving on. There is a Novotel right by the airport or you can just hang around the airport.

Phuket's atmosphere can not be compared to anything in the Carribean at all :) Just completely apples and oranges. The towns are a bit chaotic, but a great experience. Nature wise--I'd go with St. Lucia as a comparison. It is hilly and the water color is the same. White sand, though.

If you love islands, and it seems you do, you will not be sorry you came to Phuket. Also, make day trip to Racha Island and James Bond Island nearby if you go.

    good luck!

  2. It all depends on which airline you use.  Thai airways used to fly direct, but those days are over.  Japan is usually the hub for asian flights.   So I doubt your fly into Jakarta on your way to Bangkok.  Flights now are about 24 hours or more with at least two stops.
