I had a floor drain that began to flood. I snaked it out and now it does not seem to be overflowing however there is water about 3-4 inches into the pipe that just seems to sit there. Is this normal? I am not familiar with how the trap for drains work and i never thought to look in it before i had this problem. If this is not normal any ideas on how i could fix it other than try a longer snake? thanks to those who know what they are talking about. I will pick best answer.

  1. Sounds simple but use some drano. When you snake it, it doesn't always unclog the drain it just breaks everything up and makes the particles smaller. They might still be gunky enough to stick to the walls of the drain enough to slow the water flow down. By using drano directly after snaking, it will make those smaller gunk particles dissolve. If that doesn't work, when is the last time your floor drain saw extremely hot water? In a sink and in a bathtub the drain has the luxury of seeing hot water on a daily basis. Its a wonder what really hot water will do to a clogged drain as opposed what cold water will do. Don't boil the water or anything, but run super hot water through it ! Best of luck!

  2. Run a metal close hanger down in it....and see what happens there should be some water in the trap........but you shouldn't see that........trap water is to prevent sewer gases from coming back into your home........all the best........nite

  3. Yes it is normal the water is the trap seal. You could measure the depth of the water it should be about 2-1/2 in deep.

  4. same thing not robin said it is normal sometimes these traps will dry out and you will get sewer gas in your home
