Florent Malouda says Chelsea
still confident
Chelsea FC’s midfielder Florent Malouda has expressed his views about the shocking home defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea suffered their heaviest home defeat since 2002, when they were beaten 3-0 by a spirited Sunderland
FC side in the English Premier League.
The Blues were without their fringe players as Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Alex were all unable to play. Essien was serving a 3-match ban while the others were unavailable due to injury problems.
Chelsea looked out of sorts and were unable to dictate the game. A fair analysis of the game would reveal that The Black Cats were by far the better team during the 90 minutes, and thoroughly deserved the 3 points.
However, French winger Florent Malouda remains unfazed by the defeat and insists that it would not have any effect on Blues’ bid to retain the title.
He said, “Whatever people might say, we are still first in the league and that means that we have lost less points than our opponents. The sort of result against Sunderland can happen in the Premier League. We have had a great
home record and now we have to start again. But we have the players to defend our title and there is nothing more to add to that. Our confidence has not been shaken. It is a long season and anyone can have a slight dip in form - whether it is a team or an
individual. Like I said, we are still first in the league and were also one of the first to qualify out of our group for the Champions League. We will come through this spell."
After the game, manager Carlo Ancelotti described his side’s outing as “the worst performance of his reign”.
He said, “Everything was wrong and nobody played well. I have never had a result like this before with Chelsea. When everything was going so well a few months ago, I said that difficult times would arrive. Now they have arrived
and we have to sort things out in training, regain our focus and play better than we did today. We lost because Sunderland played better than us, not because of anything else. This result is a big surprise and nobody is happy about the way we have played today.
I still believe our squad is strong enough to win the title but we have to make sure that this is only one bad day."
Carlo has decided to call a team meeting when the squad members return on Thursday from international duty. It will be interesting to see the Blues’ response after the humiliating defeat. However, pundits have tipped the West Londoners
to show their fighting mettle in the coming matches and regain their previous winning form.
