Florent Serra outplays Pablo Carreno-Busta to reach the main rounds – Sud de France Open 2012
Local veteran, Florent Serra, registered an upset victory against the third seed Spanish qualifier, Pablo Carreno-Busta, in the qualifying competition of Sud de France Open on Monday. Fifth seed Serra penned a straight sets win
with the final scores of 6-4, 6-2, taking one hour and 17 minutes to book a spot in main rounds of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Local crowd at the Arena Montpellier, in Montpellier, France, witnessed a brilliant display of dominance from their hero. Serra got off to a belligerent start in the opening set and kept building pace in the next set to conclude
his surprise victory. The fifth seed French could deliver only 52 per cent of his serve on target but secured 21 out of 31 first serve points to get hold of the match.
With a below par serve precision of merely 39 per cent, Carreno-Busta could only register one serve break in the entire matchup, while his opponent stung four out of six cracking ones to get the better of him. The Spaniard’s error-ridden
game play proved too taxing in the end; he coughed six costly double faults at the crucial moments of the contest, along with a pile of unforced errors to finish on the losing side.
The first set kicked off with both men holding their opening serves but Serra didn’t waste much time and truck the first serve break of the day in the third game to lead 2-1. A hold of serve for the Frenchman took him to 3-1 but
before he could extend his lead in the set, Carreno-Busta came up with a fitting reply in the sixth game to break his serve and levelled the scores at 3-3.
Serra kept pressing for another breakthrough and he finally got one when the Spanish opponent coughed two successive double faults in the ninth game to drop his serve once again. The fifth seed French comprehensively served out
of the first set at 6-4, getting one up in the match.
Serra continued with his winning impetus in the next set and broke the Spanish serve in the opening game to lead 2-0. Carreno-Busta laboured extremely hard to make his way back in the game but his silly errors were hampering his
way. Serra nailed his fourth serve break in the fifth game of the set to lead 4-1 and held rest of his serves to conclude victory at 6-2, booking a place in the main draw of the Sud de France Open.
