Florian Mayer bounces over Marius Copil to enter quarters – China Open 2012
German challenger, Florian Mayer, made an epic comeback to triumph over the Romanian wild card entrant, Marius Copil, in a three-set nail-biter at the China Open 2012 on Wednesday. He summed up a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 221 to power
into the final eight at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Beijing, China.
The Bayreuth native made a slow start at this outdoor hard court event. However, he sought his rhythm after losing the opening set and eventually carved out the victory in one hour and 43 minutes. As a result, Mayer not only edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2
Head Series by 1-0 against the wild card but also secured a place in the quarter-finals.
The 21-year-old, who stunned fourth seeded Marin Cilic in opening round, made quick in-roads. He amazingly warded off both breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves. Copil got the breakthrough in the eighth game and eventually sealed the opener
by winning six games to three. He converted one out of three break opportunities to his advantage to stay in contention for his maiden ATP career title.
Mayer sought his rhythm in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the very next game, the German capitalised on another break chance in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead.
He then held his composure and ultimately carved out the equaliser with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 29th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Mayer went out of control in the final set. He reeled off opening four games before the Romanian could come on the score sheet. The German then held his remaining serves with poise
and clinched the decider with a 6-2 score line. He swiped his entire serves without facing any trouble and cashed in half of the four break chances to steal the show.
Mayer awaits the conqueror of the match between fifth seeded Richard Gasquet and the local wild card entrant, Ze Zhang.
