Florian Mayer breezes past Wayne Odesnik into the quarter-finals – UniCredit Czech Open
Third seed, Florian Mayer of Germany, did not face any problem in ousting USA’s Wayne Odesnik, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the second round at the UniCredit Open in Czech Republic on Wednesday. It took the German player just an
hour and 22 minutes to undo his opponent in a one sided match.
Mayer got off to the best possible start, as he struck in the opening game and held his following serve to go up 2-0. The German did not drop his serve even once till the end, sealing it 6-4.
The right-hander fired a couple of aces and made one double fault in the opener, putting in 56 percent of the first serves and clinching 16 of the 20 points on them. Mayer won most of the points on his second deliveries, as he
grabbed eight of the 17 of them. In comparison, Odesnik hit a single ace and committed the same number of double fault. The American could not put away one of the two break threats he came across and failed to avail both chances he received.
Mayer and Odesnik started the second set by holding their opening serves and levelling the score at 1-1. The German hit a blow to his opponent in the third and won his next serve to claim a 3-1 lead. He kept on dominating the proceedings,
winning two more in a row to stretch the advantage to 5-1. Odesnik succeeded in holding his serve in the seventh game to reduce the trail to 2-5 but could not do anything more, losing it 2-6.
The German repeated his first set’s performance of two aces but he did not commit any double fault in the second. He snatched eight of the 10 points on both of his first and second deliveries. The 28-year-old did not give any break
opportunity to his American opponent and converted two of the three of his own.
Mayer is slated to play either Tsung-Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei or Spain’s Albert Montanes, seeded sixth at this event, in the quarter-finals. Montanes defeated Axel Michon of France in straight sets in the first round.
