Florian Mayer brushes aside Santiago Giraldo in round one – Brisbane International 2013
World number 28, Florian Mayer, had an excellent beginning to the 2013 ATP season, outmuscling the Colombian challenger, Santiago Giraldo, in the opening round of Brisbane International on Monday morning. The sixth seeded German
took merely 65 minutes to wrap up the proceedings in twin-sets, 6-4, 6-4, to register his first win of the 2013 season.
It was a fairly one-sided matchup, with Mayer dominating all the way to his victory. He was off to a steady start but got hold of the momentum towards the middle of the opener and then never looked back. The sixth seed German cruised
through the remaining games of the match, kept winning all the crucial points and sealed a comprehensively win in style.
A conventional start to the opening set witnessed both men holding their opening three serves to drag the scores to 3-3. Mayer finally got an opening in the seventh game and he readily nailed the first serve break of the match
to attain a 4-3 lead. He went on to close the set at 6-4 after two successful holds of serve later.
The following set took off in a similar manner and Giraldo held his initial two serves to tie the score line at 2-2. The German contender registered his second break point of the day in the fifth game and came ahead at 3-2. A routine
game followed and Mayer finished off the match at 6-4.
Giraldo had a better serve game than his superior ranked opponent, winning 30 out of 40 points on his 74 per cent precise first serve. On the other hand, Mayer’s first serve accuracy reached 66 per cent for the match and he clinched
27 out of 33 points with it. However, the crucial difference between the two competitors proved to be the number of break point conversions in the match. Giraldo utterly failed to craft a single break chance in the entire contest, whilst Mayer cashed in both
of his break points to get the upper hand.
Mayer will either play the local wildcard, Benjamin Mitchell, or the Cypriot contender, Marcos Baghdatis, in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday.
