Florian Mayer demolishes Pablo Andujar to claim his first single title – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Rated at number 22 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Florian Mayer of Germany registered his first ever title victory against the 44th ranked Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, in the final of the
BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Sunday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the outdoor hard courts of Bucharest, Romania, with the second seeded Mayer recording a crushing defeat to the defending champion Andujar. Mayer wrapped up victory in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, taking one
hour and eleven minutes of play to claim the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
It was an all-German show, with Mayer dominating every second of the matchup. He avenged his last year’s defeat from Andujar, who defeated him in the round of 16 at the same venue and then went on to win the championship title.
The German appeared absolutely unplayable in the entire matchup and manhandled the defending champion with the utmost ease to get his hands on the gold.
“I’m really, really happy right now. I knew I had a chance to win,” told Mayer. “I started so nervous and of course he helped me a little bit with some mistakes. First set was very close until 3-all, and then I really played a
little better and could get over him. Yes, of course I felt pressure. I really wanted to win and it was so much pressure for me, I was so nervous. I had a good touch with my racquet and everything. I felt really good. My serve was working really good. Everything
was perfect.”
Mayer delivered 56 per cent of his serve on target and clinched 20 out of 27 first serve points to come out as the winner. The second seed converted five of his seven break chances in the contest, while Andujar registered just
one out of three break points in the matchup to finish on the losing side in the end.
The fourth seeded Spaniard drew the first blood in the fourth game of the match to break into a 3-1 lead but he went through a terrible slump in the rest of the game to let his opponent fly away with an emphatic victory. Mayer’s
demolition job got even intense in the following set, as he nailed two consecutive serve breaks to rocket away to victory at 6-1, claiming the championship title at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
