Florian Mayer disposes off Carlos Berlocq in second round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Rivalling world No.24, Florian Mayer, Carlos Berlocq fired up his 2nd rounder of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011 on Thursday, 22nd September at the heart of Romania, Bucharest. Playing on classic red clay,
the two took three sets to decide the outcome of the match with the 2nd seeded, Mayer winning the match 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes.
With the 2nd rounder on its way, Berlocq won the service toss and stood to serve first. Comparatively, the Argentine had a better prior ten match run, however, fell down instantly as he served the first game. Mayer,
world No.23, broke early, game 1, and took the lead.
Serving out game 1, the German went spectacular. Break-n-serving the Argentine once again in the set, Mayer scorched up the scoreboard, 4-0. Berlocq finally grabbed a winner and succeeded further in breaking the 27-year-old in
game 6. However, Mayer revenged and broke back immediately and served out the final game, game 8, to bag the first set, 6-2, and lead the match 1-0.
Moving on with set 2, Berlocq once again took the first serve. Proving miraculous, the Argentine gave an exemplary beating to the higher ranked German, beating him in the second set without letting him win a single game. Clearing
up game 1, the Argentine fired up the break-serve-break technique and lifted up a 3-0 lead.
Mayer did try to break his rival but seemed helpless as Berlocq seemed invincible at the time. Repeating his break-serve-break tactic, the Argentine levelled up the match scores winning the second set with a bagel.
With the match blazed up, the decider went off with Berlocq serving first for the third time. Considering the fact that the Argentine won the 2nd set with a bagel, should’ve won the decider easily. However, the German
world No.23 struck back hard.
Nailing the first game breaking the world No.71, Mayer took the advantage lead and followed with a win in game 2. Switching back the serve, the scores went to 1-2 as Berlocq won his first game of set 3. The scores peaked up and
levelled up when Berlocq served out game 5 and broke his rival in the 6th, 3-3.
Mayer, however, recovered and broke back in game 7 to take a 4-3 set lead. The 28-year-old did try to pull off with another breakpoint, yet could not do it. Serving out 2 out of the next 3 games, German world No.23 mustered away
with the 3rd set winning 6-4 and the match, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
27-year-old now sits comfortable in the quarter-final round to play against Albert Ramos-Vinolas for a spot in the semi-final.
