Florian Mayer dumps Facundo Bagnis to reach the second round – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Fifth seeded Florian Mayer blasted past the Argentinean rising star, Facundo Bagnis, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Monday. He joggled up a 6-2, 6-4 success over the 22-year-old to secure a place in the second round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event held in Acapulco, Mexico.
The German veteran brought his experience into handy after overpowering Bagnis in straight sets in their first meeting. After earning success in this one hour and 13-minutes battle, he not only took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against
the Argentinean but also advanced into the second round at this clay court tournament.
Ranked 18th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Mayer displayed perfect tennis in the opening set. He brushed off the only breakpoint he encountered and cashed in both break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-2 win.
Through his tremendous defensive skills, the German blocked all four breakpoints he faced in the proceeding set. He then converted one out of two break opportunities to his advantage and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, the seed dominated throughout the match at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. He smashed seven vicious aces and apart from formulating a lower first serve share of 59 percent, Mayer brilliantly marked 27 out of 35 points on it.
Mayor will next face the Spanish contender, Pablo Andujar, who also trashed the Argentinean competitor to reach this spot. The Spaniard sought 10 break chances and availed three of them to register a 7-6(5), 6-3 score line against Leonardo Mayer.
Seventh seeded Marcel Granollers will join the German in the second round. He tumbled over the Brazilian challenger, Thomaz Bellucci, in straight sets to earn the spotlight.
The world number 28 improved to a 2-0 head-to-head record against Bellucci after earning this victory. Both stars previously met each other at the Buenos Aires ATP event three years ago.
The high flying Spaniard lost his serve once in the opening set. However, he capitalised on both break chances to secure a 6-4 win.
Granollers improved his winning ways in the following set and kept entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He broke the Brazilian’s serve twice and pocketed the set with a 6-2 success.
The seventh seed will square off against the winner of the match between the wild card enterer David Nalbandian and Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.
