Florian Mayer moved past Nicolas Almagro in the third round of 2011 Sony Ericsson Open
Florian Mayer of Germany overcame Nicolas Almagro of Spain in three straight sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at the third round of 2011 Sony Ericsson open on Monday. The match lasted one hour and thirty four minutes.
Putting in his fifth appearance at the event, Florian reached his second career best performance for the Miami Masters event. His first best performance for the event came in 2005 where he defeated Fernando Gonzalez in the third
round, before losing to Taylor Dent in the fourth round.
In the first set, Mayer hit 65 per cent of first serves and altered 85 per cent of points out of them. Mayer didn’t face any breakpoint opportunity in the first set, whereas Almagro saved 50 per cent of them. Both players served
in two aces though the Spaniard fell behind in the conversion rate, he could only register a meager 55 per cent on his 50 percent first serves.
The second set was not favorable for the German as he lost it 3-6. The German could only register 69 per cent of points on his meager 48 per cent first serves. Mayer saved 75 per cent of his break point opportunities, a much lower
percentage than his opponents whopping 100 per cent. Almagro arrived at a 71 per cent gain on his 65 per cent first serves. Almagro got a hold of 100 per cent breakpoints and clinched a 6-3 win in the second set to push the match into a decider.
The deciding set was a tough nut to crack, as both were trying their best to get it down. Mayer hit four aces and 61 per cent of his first serves, while Almagro landed with 2 aces and 31 per cent of the first serves. Both players
held an outstanding winning percentage on first serves; Mayer scored 91 per cent whereas nonetheless Almagro put down an equally good percentage of 80 percent on the first serves. In an intense competition, Mayer successfully converted 100 per cent breakpoint
opportunities and cemented the final set with a bagel win.
Mayer will confront Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic in the next round. The Czech is carrying his winning strength all the way from the second round match to the fourth round ousting Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Carlos Berlocq along
the way.
This will be fourth meeting between these two players. Berdych leads their official head to head record by 3-0. Their last meeting came four years back when the Czech defeated Florian in straight sets at Munich, Germany.
