Florian Mayer outfoxes Tim Smyczek to reach round two – Gerry Weber Open 2012
German tennis ace, Florian Mayer, eased into the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday at the expense of the 202nd ranked American qualifier, Tim Smyczek. He registered straight sets 6-4, 6-4 scores in the
first clash against the 24-year-old American who is yet to figure out his thunderous form this season.
The 28-year-old German exerted pressure on her rival right from the start. He comfortably held his respective serves and continued to thump her rival on his serves; finally got a breakthrough in the seventh game and lead the scores
4-3. Soon, he served for the set and clasped all four points on his serve to post another serve hold to love.
The start to the second set was similar to the first. The local kept on pressurizing the visitor in all departments especially on the backhand returns. Smyczek lost an early breakpoint in the third game and Mayer consolidated his
position with another serve hold to love.
Sunning start to the second set helped the 29th German to dominate the proceedings for the rest of the play. Both players capitalized on the serves but the visitor had to win a break back to tie the scores. The American
was unable to win a single breakthrough the set and lost the match.
In a post-match interview, Mayer stated, “For sure there are easier draw. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward. I don’t have anything to lose. It’s his first match, that’s always a bit difficult. Of course, he is the absolute favourite
but I intend to give him a hard time and I think that I have a small chance, even if it’s really tiny, to keep up with him.”
Mayer smashed six aces in the match and grabbed 66 points in total. He converted two out of six allotted breakpoints and posted an impressive first and second serve conversion rate. It was a good performance overall and must lift
the morale of the German just before he plays the second seed contestant of the tournament, the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. World number three, Federer, loves playing on grass court and will look to dominate the proceedings in Halle, the place that has always
brought pleasant results for him.
Bad news for the Aussie fans was aired when the 19-year-old superstar from Australia, Bernard Tomic, retired just after seven games of the first set due to an abdominal disorder.
