Florian Mayer outplays Albert Ramos to clear first round in Beijing – China Open 2011
World number 22, Florian Mayer of Germany, continued his sublime form to outclass the 78th ranked Spaniard, Albert Ramos, in the opening round of the China Open on Monday afternoon.
The unseeded German wrapped up the contest in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, taking one hour and twelve minutes of play to make it to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
Mayer bagged his first ATP singles title a week ago, when he defeat the defending champion, Pablo Andujar, in the final of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy. He carried on his aggression in the Monday’s matchup as well and registered
his 39th victory of the current season. The German earlier defeated Ramos in the quarter-final clash 6-1, 6-2, in Bucharest, Romania, and now lead 2-0 against the Spaniard in singles matches.
Ramos displayed his brilliant skills in the qualifying rounds of the China Open to book a date with Mayer in the main draw but crumbled against the 22nd ranked contestant without posing much resistance. The Spaniard
utterly failed to register a single break point in the entire matchup, squandering away four vital opportunities to let the German fly away with a comprehensive victory.
Mayer converted three out of his 10 break chances in the contest and held his serve all the way to victory. He dropped just six points on his serve in the whole matchup, reeling off 27 out of 33 first serve points to drive Ramos
out of the competition.
The unseeded German broke the Spanish serve right up, racing to a 4-0 love in no time. Ramos failed to recover from the early damage and submitted the first set to Mayer at 2-6. Only one serve break in the second set proved sufficient
for the German to wrap up victory at 6-4, moving into the second round of the China Open.
Mayer will take on the winner of the encounter between the seventh seeded American, John Isner, and the former world number three, Ivan Ljubicic, in the next round for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
