Florian Mayer slaughters Fabio Fognini in opening round – China Open 2012
German challenger, Florian Mayer, tumbled the Italian rising star, Fabio Fognini, with a breadstick at the China Open 2012 on Sunday. He nudged up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the world number 47 to power into the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event taking place in Beijing, China.
The Bayreuth native unveiled his true colours and eventually carved out the victory in their third meeting. After registering the success in 52 minutes, Mayer not only improved over to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the 25-year-old
but also charged into the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court event.
Mayer thundered into the National Tennis Center in Beijing. He unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and reeled off five games in a row before Fognini could hold in. The German plucked his serve once more and clicked the opener with a breadstick. He pocketed
his entire serves without facing any hindrance and cashed in both break chances to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 29th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Mayer maintained consistency in the proceeding game. After Fognini kept his serve in the third game, the German went on another five-game rampage, eventually sealing the set by
winning six games to two. He was again never threatened with any breakpoint and converted two out of three break chances to his advantage.
All in all, Mayer fired four aces and coughed fewer double faults. He clobbered a lower first serve share of 42 per cent as compared to his rival’s 65 per cent and marked 14 out of 18 points on it. The German clinched the match with 55 points and moved a
step closer towards his maiden career title this circuit.
Mayer will face off the Romanian wild card entrant, Marius Copil, who stunned fourth seeded Marin Cilic in a three-set thriller to set up this date.
The local wild card entrant, Ze Zhang, also earned the fame later that day. He jolted down a 6-4, 6-1 success against his compatriot, Di Wu, in one hour and 17 minutes.
