Florian Mayer wipes out Albert Ramos in quarterfinal – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Closing the quarterfinal of the Bucharest Open 2011 on Friday, 23rd of September, second seeded German Florian Mayer contested against unseeded Albert Ramos of Spain. Duelling on classic clay courts at Bucharest, Romania,
the German world Number 24 ousted the 23-year-old Espanola 6-1, 6-2 in just sixty seven minutes of play and walked into the semi-final.
The starting set kicked off with Mayer opting to serve and opened the set by easily placing himself on the scoreboard at 1-0. Making it look like a practice session, the German went on to breaking the Espanola early in the second
game. Following up with another hold of serve, he now led the score with a 3-0.
The Espanola won his first game of the set in the fourth game, by hitting a backhand winner but unfortunately for him that was the only shot his fans got to see. As from there onwards Mayer fired up to a higher level. Although
the Spaniard tried to make a comeback but his victory was restricted to the only game in the set. The 23 year-old Espanola was dumb founded when his opponent did not setup a single break point opportunity in the opening set.
The German not only served out on his respective serves but also went on to breaking Ramos in the remaining four games to end up with a quick bread stick victory.
Moving onto the second set, Mayer opted to serve first again and took the first game, while serving, 1-0. The two then pulled off a game for a game for the first four games of the second set. Every time the German took the lead,
the Espanola tried to follow for the initial four games and tied the score at 2-2. However, this cat and mouse chase was cut short when, in the sixth game, the German broke and took the lead at 4-2.
By winning the following game with a cross-court winner, the second set moved in favour of the world number 23 as he was now standing at 5-2. Serving out for the final game of the set, Mayer took the second set winning with a 6-2
and the match 2-0.
The German converted four of his ten break point opportunities and won 79 percent of points on his first serve to clinch his 36th victory of his career-best season.
The 27 year-old will now play against Italian, Filippo Volandri in the semi-final of the Bucharest Open 2011.
