Florida Marlins: Logan Morrison sets up camp to fight lung cancer
First baseman Logan Morrison will always remember the time his father showed up at a ball game to see him play. The man, who had groomed his son into a prodigy for the Florida Marlins, passed away this month and left a lot for
his son to look up to. Logan had been part of the first team squad this season and with the passing of his father, he hopes to make a difference.
His father was diagnosed with lung cancer and that got the player thinking for the future. After his father’s death, Morrison thought of helping other people experiencing the same problems. Logan has come up with the idea to launch
a ‘LoMo Camp for a Cure’. The event is designed to impart baseball skills to participants who originate from families facing cancer.
"I was just sitting down thinking about stuff that we could do for him after this season," Morrison said. "This idea came about and I decided on doing a camp to help other families with the struggles."
Many notable club figures are said to be appearing and that has Morrison delighted with the club’s backing. He was able to talk about his father and linked this idea with him.
"He was always out there with me, working with me at baseball," Morrison said. "That's something that I want to get across to these kids, too. You go out and have a great time playing baseball, but you learn a lot of life lessons,
too. It's learning how to deal with the issues you have in baseball and life, too. That's what we're trying to do here."
Logan Morrison will be part of the Marlins attack next season and the 2010 rookie ball player will be tasked to take care of the left outfield when the season kicks off in April. The 23-year-old has a pool of talent to back him
up and his potential seems to be the key point his father saw in him when he groomed the ball star into a prodigy. Logan averaged .283 with the bat in the previous regular league season. In addition to that, he managed to pull off two home runs during the
season.
Morrison batted in 18 assist runs for the club. His slugging ratio peaked at around .477 and his on base percentage hit .390. At the end of the season, Morrison piled on 43 runs in 62 games.
