Florida Marlins: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
After ending the month of July with a decent 53-55 win-loss record, Florida Marlins were looking to strengthen their position in the Wild Card standings with consistent performances in August 2011 as well. In a three match series against New York Mets, the
Marlins looked in supreme form as they secured comfortable wins in the opening two games to grab their first series victory of the month.
In game one, the Marlins made the most of the available opportunities to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Mike Stanton hit a grand slam in the tenth inning of the game as Florida crushed New York Mets to earn their first win of the month.
"It is deflating a little bit, but you've got to give our guys credit the way they rebounded and came up with four straight hits," Florida manager Jack McKeon said. "They didn't give up and say, 'Oh, tough luck.' We went right after them."
The Marlins showed amazing character, fighting abilities and determination in a thrilling game two to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series. Improving their win-loss record 55-55 after they had a 1-19 fall in the month of June, the Marlins had managed to
salvage some of their lost pride.
Marlins were down and out with a 2-3 deficit but a throwing error from Mets’ second baseman Justin Turner allowed them to score two runs in the ninth inning and rally past their opponents 4-2.
"We've given a few away like that one tonight. We're appreciative to get it," Florida manager Jack McKeon said.
However, in their next four match series against St. Louis Cardinals, the Marlins were unable to maintain their form as they were defeated in all four games. The Cardinals displayed some high quality baseball in the opening game to get off to a flying start
in the series. Despite putting up a brilliant fight in game two of the series, Florida Marlins were unable to get over the finishing line as they lost their second straight game 3-2.
In a very competitive games three of the series, the Marlins, once again, failed to respond as they let their rivals secure an impressive 3-0 series victory. The Marlins were completely outplayed in the fourth and final game of the series to suffer their
first series sweep of the month. Struggling to handle the pressure, Jack McKeon was yet again brushed aside 3-0 in a three match series against Atlanta Braves, which extended their losing streak to seven matches.
The Marlins continued to perform poorly and they lost the series to San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets to end the month with a pitiable 60-75 win-loss record.
