Florida Marlins: Regular season results – MLB July 2011
With only five wins in 28 games, the month of June 2011 had proved to be a disaster for the Florida Marlins as they struggled to come out of the slump. Losing series to Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles
Angels and Seattle Mariners, the Florida Marlin’s poor performances damaged their win-loss record to 36-45.
The Marlins were hoping to restore some of their lost pride with effective and consistent performances in the month of July. Although they lost the opening game of a three match series against Texas Rangers, the Marlins kept pushing hard for their first
series victory of the month. Battling back, the Marlins were absolutely brilliant in game two as they secured a comfortable 9-5 win to level the series at 1-all.
Hanley Ramirez hit a wonderful home-run in first innings to let his side get off to a flying start and his second homer finished the Rangers as the Marlins eased past their rivals to stay in the series.
"I mean, the last five games, I think we've been playing the game together and we've been getting on base and working on that, not like we were doing that a week, two weeks or three weeks ago," Ramirez said.
In the third and final game of the series, the Marlins, once again, showed great determination, fighting skills and character as they came back from behind to register their only second series victory in nearly five weeks. Logan Morrison had a tie-breaking
two run double in the eighth innings and the Marlins rallied past the Rangers to win the series 2-1.
"No matter what happens before or what happens after, we've got to keep it going," Morrison said. "We can't think about what we have done. We've got to keep pushing. ... (McKeon) is very energetic on the bench. He keeps you locked in. He's a good man to
have at the helm."
Although Edwin Rodriguez and his men failed to deliver the goods against the powerful Philadelphia Phillies, they were back to their best in a four game series against the Houston Astros. Emerging victorious in each game, the Marlins looked in a very confident
mood. Crushing the Astros 5-0 in the opening game, the Marlins got off to an impressive start. Maintaining their form in next three games of the series, they earned their second series sweep of the regular season.
With series wins over the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and Washington Nationals, the Marlins ended the month on a very positive note to improve their win-loss record to 53-55. The Marlins were playing like a team as they were building up some much needed
confidence.
