Florida Marlins: Regular season results – MLB May 2011
Ending the month of April 2011 with an impressive 16-9 win-loss record, things were looking very bright for the Florida Marlins. Edwin Rodriguez and his men were looking to top the standings table with strong and consistent performances in May 2011. In a
four match series against St. Louis Cardinals, the Marlins showed amazing character, determination and fighting abilities as they came back from behind to register an emphatic 6-5 win in the opening game.
Gaby Sanchez hit a towering grand slam and Mike Stanton hit a tying home-run in the fifth inning and then scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of the game to lift his side to an incredible 6-5 win.
"These are the kind of games that show what type of team you are," Stanton said. "We're definitely showing we're a different team from the previous year."
"We're getting good pitches and guys aren't missing them," Sanchez said. "I don't think this team by any means has a power problem."
Although the Marlins failed to deliver in game two of the series, they bounced back brilliantly in the third game to take a crucial 2-1 lead. In a sensational 8-7 win over the Cardinals, Mike Stanton displayed some high quality hitting skills as he batted
in a tie-breaking two run drive in the ninth inning. Hitting his third home-run in four games, Stanton lifted his side to a memorable 8-7 win.
"He faced [Albert] Pujols, he faced Holliday," Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Once a while you've going to hit home runs against him. But he's been doing a great job."
However, loss in concentration resulted in a disaster for Rodriguez and his men in the fourth and final game of the series and St. Louis secured a comfortable 6-3 win to even the series at 2-2.
The Marlins were unable to handle the pressure in their next three match series against the Washington Nationals as well. Losing the plot completely, Edwin Rodriguez’s side made critical mistakes in game one to let their opponents take a 1-0 lead in the
series. Wasting opportunities, the Marlins were hopeless in the second game as well and the Nationals took complete advantage of their errors to secure a comfortable series win.
Regrouping, the Marlins embarrassed their rivals in the third and final game to salvage some of their lost pride. Not allowing a single run in eight innings, the pitchers did a fantastic job for the Marlins as they cruised to an amazing 8-0 win. With wins
over New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays and San Francisco Giants, the Marlins ended the month of April with a decent 31- 22 win-loss record.
