Florida Marlins beat Washington Nationals 3-2 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins overcame a tough fight from the Washington Nationals, defeating the latter 3-2 helped by Bryan Petersen’s walk-off homer after Javier Vazquez tossed a complete-game on Tuesday, September 27 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Doug Slaten pitched one ordinary delivery to lose his second game of the season after having bagged two outs in the last inning for the Nationals. Petersen held his nerve to smash the ball 404-feet towards right-field under immense pressure, preventing the
90th loss for the Marlins this season.
Vazquez spelled his domination on the mound with an immaculate complete-game effort, restricting the visitors to just two runs and allowing five hits in the stretch. With Leo Nunez not among the ranks, Vazquez made sure that a closer is not required, tossing
three scoreless innings in the depth to keep the score under check.
Earlier in the game, Vazquez made a record for his ballclub, pitching 29 scoreless innings in succession before Michael Morse hammered a home-run in the fifth inning to bring an end to this streak. Vazquez could not have asked for a better end to his career,
winning a game and leaving on a high. Wednesday’s season ending game against the Nationals will also be the last game to be played at Sun Life Stadium as the Marlins prepare to move into a new retractable-roof ballpark in downtown Miami.
Matt Dominguez opened the scoring for the Marlins in the third inning to take a crucial lead after having dropped the first game in the three-game series. Morse’s home-run in the fifth followed by Stephen Lombardozzi’s run in the sixth inning saw the Nationals
wipe out the deficit and impose a one-run lead on the home-team.
Emilio Bonifacio was quick to level the score at the bottom of the second inning before Petersen homered in the ninth to seal the encounter and level the series 1-1.
John Lannan pitched six innings for Washington and allowed just two runs amid three hits to bring his earned-run average down to 3.70. Yunesky Maya and Todd Coffey pitched a perfect inning each before Slaten lost it in the ninth inning.
