Florida Marlins boost bullpen with trades, mission accomplished?
Major League baseball is entering the off season and with the winter season taking its toll on the country, the players and the ball clubs are taking a breather from the game of baseball.
The nature of the closed season presents many teams the opportunity to sign on good players and enter the free agents’ market for useful players. With the San Francisco Giants clinching the World Series in 2010, the chase is on to sign the best crop of players
and reel them in as quickly as possible.
The Florida Marlins are one such team to be actively involved in the off season. Their recent trading activity has availed the side 3 new bullpen members, who have come in from deals with the San Diego Padres and the Boston Red Sox. The side had to let go
of Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin to bring in Ryan Webb, Edward Mujica and Dustin Richardson in the bullpen roster.
Larry Beinfest, the Marlins president of baseball operations was pleased to see the transaction happen and he went on to say, "Three relievers in two days. Like we said when the offseason was beginning, the bullpen was a priority, and we went right at it.
In this deal, we identified a club that had young relief pitching depth. We saw the Padres as a team that might be in need of a center fielder. This thing cooked up rather quickly, and it seemed to make sense. This deal happened to take advantage of each other's
needs".
Beinfest then went on to comment about Andrew Miller and Cameron Myabin by saying:
"I still think for both of them that they will be very good Major Leaguers. Cameron has wonderful talent. He dealt with some injuries. He dealt with some non-performance. He never really had the sustained time in the big leagues to show what we think he
was capable of doing at the time of the trade.
They'll get an opportunity elsewhere. They came together. But it wasn't one of those deals where we were thinking of moving them on together, either. It happened in two days of each other. It was just one of those things. You've got to give to get, and Cameron
is a good young talent. In order to get the quality of relievers that we got back, you have to deal good young talent, which happened to be Cameron".
