Florida Marlins defeat Atlanta Braves 6-5 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins overcame the strong Atlanta Braves 6-5 on Monday, September 19 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida to gain a crucial one-game lead in the three-game series.
The Marlins are struggling at the bottom of National League East division and a series win here might deny the Braves a postseason berth.
Mike Stanton homered twice for the Marlins to give them a worthy two-run lead upfront. He smashed Braves’ starter Mike Minor for a home-run in the first inning, 408-feet down left-field before replicating this feat in the third inning to double the lead
for the home side. Stanton connected twice in his three at-bats and got the maximum result on each occasion.
The Braves countered in the sixth inning with a home-run to right-flank but Logan Morrison was quick to add a two-run homer for the Marlins in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to three-runs.
Marlins' manager Jack McKeon was all praise for his hitters and said, "I don't ever recall any team that hit home runs the distance of those guys -- those three were crushed. It was nice to see Mike get back in the groove and put a fear into some of those
guys."
Stanton has had an amazing season thus far and remained content after the game, urging his team to remain positive for the remaining eight games of the regular season. He said, "We're out of it and it's easy to look toward the offseason already, but we still
have eight games left."
Braves scored four runs in the seventh inning to gain a one-run advantage over the home-side, but Craig Kimbrel failed to hold this lead and lost the game in the ninth inning. Kimbrel has managed to mark himself as an established closer for the Braves but
lost his third game when his team desperately needed a win.
Omar Infante scored a two-run home-run under immense pressure to clinch the game for the home team in the last inning, leaving the visiting team in tatters for the Wild Card spot.
Clay Hensley tossed two perfect innings in the depth to win his sixth game of the season for the Marlins.
