Florida Marlins defeat Cincinnati Reds 6-5 – MLB Update
Logan Morrison hit the 18th homer of the season to help the Florida Marlins beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Wednesday, August 24 at Sun Life Stadium.
Morrison remained excellent with bat after having been relegated to minors for over a week.
As for Homer Bailey, in the seven innings that he pitched, he struck-out four and allowed three runs in the two hits that he gave up. "As the game went on I felt I kept getting a little bit better and I wanted to go out there for the eighth, but (Baker)
wouldn't let me," Bailey said.
Cincinnati started the game with Joey Votto’s homer coming in the third inning just when the Reds’ starter Homer Bailey barely allowed any Marlins’ hitter to go for runs. The 2-0 lead stayed for a while until Logan Morrison came back with a homer.
It was obviously a big moment for him since the demotion had come as a shocking surprise to him. "It means a lot," Morrison said. "It doesn't matter what jersey I have on, I just want to contribute. I'm happy."
It was the 18th homer for Logan Morrison of the Marlins, followed by another two-run homer coming off Jose Lopez’ bat, that gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead in the game. However, Brandon Phillips was quick to score a single to level the score in the
fifth against Javier Vazquez.
As both the starters kept tossing strong and solid innings throughout the latter half of the game, keeping it tied, the offence of the respective teams struggled to come up with something valuable for the team.
Coming into the eighth inning, Jose Arredondo was asked to relieve Bailey. But as he came to pitch, he was taken to task by the Florida Marlins’ hitters. First it was Omar Infante who singled to left to score the tiebreaking run, giving the team a 4-3 lead.
Soon after that Gregg Dobbs scored a two-run double to put the Marlins on the track with a 6-3 lead in the 3-run four-hit eighth inning.
Although Edward Mujica faltered in the ninth inning, he somehow saved the game for the Marlins. Coming as a closer, Mujica allowed a homer to Todd Frazier which brought down the lead to 6-5. But other hitters were sent packing by the closer to end the game
with 6-5 victory for the Florida Marlins.
The Marlins put in a tremendous effort at they managed to restrict the Reds’ offence from scoring in the crucial innings. The Reds will be looking to improve their performance before their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Marlins can
carry their winning momentum forward into their next game.
