Florida Marlins defeat New York Mets 4-1 – MLB Update
Clay Hensley pitched five strong innings to help the Florida Marlins defeat the New York Mets 4-1 on Monday, July 18 at Citi Field in New York.
Mike Stanton hit a two-run double in the victory that came the Marlins way.
However, it was a slightly new outlook of the Marlins, especially when it was facing a far tougher and stronger game in the face of the New York Mets.
Having played 21 games this season, Hensley has maintained an impressive 2.70 ERA and surprising of all was his return from the disabled list. With his five strong innings that he pitched, he prevailed at the end, leaving the Mets’ hitters straining.
"We never thought we were going to the park to lose a game, but Jack kind of adds a little life to the dugout, keeps it loose in there with his sayings, and does a good job of managing the game," out-fielder Logan Morrison said.
Once Hensley came for pitching, his pace saw an upward trend and the velocity increased. The starter, despite his previous injury, did not leave any trace of his being unfit. In fact, every inning that he pitched showed his successful rehab.
"We're interested in winning," McKeon said. "We're not going to worry about hurting anybody's feelings. I would think that everyone on this club would be interested in winning, and that's the way it's going to be. If someone doesn't like it, that's too bad."
Hensley went about the three scoreless innings. His rival Chris Capuano was equally unyielding, as he threw effective pitches that rendered the Marlins’ hitters unable to go for big hits.
However, the game took a turn when Mike Stanton struck the biggest hit of the game so far to left-centre, enabling Hanley Ramirez to score. His hit brought two important and valuable runs.
Before Capuano could adjust, in quick succession came another hit. This time it was Mike Cameron who stuck another hit, singling to shallow left, tripling the lead for the Marlins.
Hensley maintained the 3-0 lead for the Marlins with his fastballs. He pitched the fifth inning only to be replaced by Mike Dunn who did not allow any run either to the Mets, keeping the team in the charge of the game.
While Capuano had already given up three runs, the Mets decided to keep him unchanged. The decision proved costly as Logan Morrison hit to score the fourth run for the Marlins.
Edward Mujica pitched a shut-out eighth and Randy Choate gave up a run in the ninth to Jason Bay, but sent other hitters packing to give the Marlins a 4-1 victory in the only game of the series.
