Florida Marlins defeat New York Mets 9-3 – MLB Update
The Florida Marlins put in a tremendous performance as they beat the New York Mets 9-3 on September 5 at Sun Life Stadium, Miami.
After recording a walk off victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on their last game of a four-game series, the Florida Marlins looked more than prepared to take on the New York Mets. The team has been looking to climb the National League East table for
a while now and with a few weeks remaining, there opportunity seems to be right around the corner.
The Marlins handed the pitching duties to Javier Vazquez who is rumoured to end his career after this season. Much to the appreciation of the crowd, the veteran did nothing to disappoint as the hurler picked up his ninth win of the season.
Marlins pounced on the Mets from the first inning. Chris Capuano was hit for two runs. Emilio Bonifacio and Gaby Sanchez picked up the runs for the Marlins, early on. Jose Lopez then returned in the bottom third to slam the Mets’ pitcher for a home-run down
left field. With three runs down, New York responded in the top of the fourth with David Wright who scored a run off Angel Pagan’s ground out.
With the score 3-1 in favour of the Marlins, Mike Cameron, John Buck and Bryan Petersen added to the pile with three more runs off Capuano, in the bottom of the fourth. Florida went ahead again in the bottom of the fifth when a Mike Cameron double allowed
Gaby Sanchez to score the seventh run for the team.
The lead went to 9-1 when Omar Infante scored for the Marlins in the bottom of the sixth. The Mets were unable to get past Vazquez and Jason Bay was able to bring on two runs with a homer in the ninth off relief pitcher Chris Hatcher.
The game ended with Florida winning 9-3. Vazquez picked up the win with an ERA average of 4.29. The player struck-out seven hitters.
"It was all working. I had a good fastball," said Vazquez. "I threw a lot of strikes today. The guys scored a lot of runs. Like I always say, it makes it a little easier."
The starter has reached double digits, each season, for the last 12 years and he’s rumoured to retire soon. When asked if he would reconsider, the 35-year-old responded in the negative.
"It's not going to be hard," Vazquez said in regards to deciding his future. "It's one of those things, if I do go out, that's actually how I want to go out, pitching good. I don't want to go out pitching poorly. I'm still having a good time out there."
The star is currently 29th in the all-time strike-out list. His tally rests on 2507 and he went up in place of Hall of Famer, Christy Mathewson, who is on 2,502.
