Florida Marlins defeat Seattle Mariners 4-2 – MLB Update
Florida Marlins beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 in a game that was completed in 2:08 minutes, making it the quickest of the season at Safeco Field, Seattle on Saturday, June 25.
Florida tied the three-game series by 1-1 after the Mariners defeated the Marlins 5-1 in the previous game.
Chris Volstad not only drove a run but also pitched seven innings in achieving the victory. “He pitched real well,” said manager Jack McKeon of Volstad. “He got in a little trouble in the seventh inning. But, up until that time, he was pretty spectacular."
Volstad started the game with some serious aggression, pitching scoreless innings to contain Seattle’s offence. His first inning was hitless. “He challenged guys tonight,” McKeon said. “He went right after them tonight. That’s the way I want him to pitch.”
Hanley Ramirez went after the Seattle starter Jason Vargas who gave up four hits in the inning. Ramirez hit a two-run homer to give his team a comfortable 2-0 lead following which Mike Stanton hit an RBI single to triple the lead.
The game remained in the clutches of an elusive Marlins’ defence which was strengthened by the starter Volstad. While the lead was 3-0, his innings incapacitated the Seattle hitters.
The fifth inning saw a resurgent Carlos Peguero who hit a homer to score the first run for the Mariners. However, that did not last long as Volstad compensated the run he allowed with a hit in the sixth, scoring the fourth run for the Marlins.
Seventh inning proved to be somewhat tougher for Volstad who, intent upon being beyond play, involuntarily gave up three hits and allowed a run to Chone Figgins, bringing the Mariners score to two.
Edward Mujica who came to replace Volstad remained effective and did not allow any hit, maintaining the 4-2 lead for his team following whom Leo Nunez pitched the scoreless ninth inning to turn the 4-2 lead into a glorious win.
“Nunez blew them away in the ninth, which was nice to see,” McKeon said. “He didn’t mess around, fool around. He went right after them.” Compared to nine hits that the Mariners gave up, the Marlins’ pitchers only gave up six hits.
The Marlins put in a good performance to fight back from their previous defeat to the Mariners to level the series. It will be interesting to see if Florida can carry their winning momentum into their next game of the match-up. Seattle struggled throughout
the game as they were unable to get their offence going. With the series level, the Mariners will be looking to improve their performance and dominate the next game.
