Florida Marlins lose 0-4 to Atlanta Braves – MLB Update
The Florida Marlins lost 0-4 against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, September 20 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
After having edged past 6-5 in the first game, the Marlins failed to answer Randall Delgado’s spotless pitching, allowing the Braves to resurge in their conquest to retain the Wild Card spot after seeing their lead drop to just 2.5 games over the St. Louis
Cardinals.
Delgado pitched five scoreless innings to bag his first win at the professional level, allowing just five hits to the home-side in this stretch. Omar Infante was the most successful batter for the Marlins, going 2-for-4 after having scored a walk-off home-run
in the previous game to seal victory from an almost impossible situation.
"They don't give us too much to hit," Marlins' manager Jack McKeon said. "What they give us to hit, we can't do much with."
On the contrary, Anibal Sanchez’s hard luck against the Braves continued as he lost his third game against Atlanta this season in as many starts to see his win-loss record dip to 8-9. Sanchez allowed three runs and five hits in his spell of five innings.
Although he struck-out six batters in a total of 83 pitches and generated 53 strikes, the offence was never allowed to chase down the three-runs he had leaked.
Brian Sanches came in to relieve Sanchez in the sixth inning but Freddie Freeman sent one down centre-field to impose a commanding four-run lead over the Marlins, sending the weakest team in the NL East into tatters.
Marlins were in-line to eradicate the three-run deficit in the third inning and impose a one-run lead with bases loaded, but Alex Gonzalez expertly defended Logan Morrison’s hit to deny the home team a scoring opportunity.
Atlanta’s manager Fredi Gonzalez appreciated the defensive quality shown by the Braves and emphasised that this dramatically changed the game.
Marlins have lost six of their previous ten games and have managed to win only one series out of three in this stretch. Here, they still have a chance to bag a series win with the finale scheduled for Wednesday, September 21.
