Florida Marlins not to change their Web address – MLB Update
The Florida Marlins will officially become the Miami Marlins on Friday, November 11, with a new address, but the same old web address. The ballclub does not intend to add ‘Miami’ to its current address of Marlins.com, becoming the only team in Major League
Baseball not to use their full name as their web address.
The Marlins are scheduled to unveil a new uniform as well on the same day when the name changes, completing the massive overhaul of the National League East side. The Marlins failed to make an impression this past season, finishing at the bottom of the division
and hence instigating the changes in the structure of the franchise.
With new manager Ozzie Guillen already at the helm of affairs, the Marlins are expected to play an active part in the free agent market. The management is in talks with Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle and it seems that one if not both will surely land in Miami
before the next season begins. The Marlins are looking to instil stability in the bull-pen and thus will not hesitate in offering long-term lucrative contracts to star players.
While the logistics of the roster are yet to be finalised, a lot of speculation has been made on the web address. MiamiMarlins.com is currently owned by Guido Blanco, a boat salesman and fishing aficionado and he has no intention of keeping the web domain
hostage.
Explaining his position, Blanco stated that he is ready to sell the domain and will be more than willing to cash in on the commodity. He asserted that the value of this domain is subjective and cannot be calculated, but has definitely increased manifold
because of a Major League Baseball team.
Blanco articulated that he had always intended to use this address for selling boats and he had no idea in 1997, when he purchased the domain, that the Florida Marlins will change their name.
Marlins’ President David Samson played down talks about the web domain and stressed that this is one issue that no one in the management cares about. Samson added that the franchise will be happy to take the domain, but paying heavily is not an option.
