Florida Marlins shatter 10-game losing streak beating Los Angeles Angels 5-2 – MLB Update
After being down in 10 consecutive games, the Florida Marlins finally managed to nip their losing streak with a 5-2 win in the second game of the three-game interleague series against the Los Angeles Angels, at the Sun Life Stadium on Tuesday, June 21.
The Marlins might have shattered their losing streak two days earlier on June 19 against the Tampa Bay Rays, but they were unable to prevent their tenth consecutive loss despite the fact that their right-hand pitcher Chris Volstad achieved his best start
of the season. Volstad gave up just one run for the first time in this season, allowing six hits, walking four and striking-out four over seven innings.
Marlins had lost 19 of their last 20 games.
However, this time his fellow starter Javier Vazquez did not let the Angels touch even for a single run under the management of 80-year-old Jack McKeon, who joined the team after their veteran manager Edwin Rodriguez resigned on Sunday due to poor performance
of the club.
It was an obvious source of pleasure for McKeon as he enjoyed a win in his second game.
"We're a summer team," McKeon said. "Today is the first day of the summer. We like to play much better baseball in the summer than we do in the spring. So watch out from now on because summer's here and we're here."
Vazquez went for just over five innings without allowing any run and struck-out four batters to take his fourth win of the season. He allowed ten hits, at least one in each inning but kept the Angels to no-score to reduce his ERA to 6.37 ERA, still the most
expensive pitcher in Majors.
Gaby Sanchez led the game off with the bat, launching a dazzling one-run homer that was the serious blow for the Angels’ strong starter Ervin Santana. After this homer, Santana completely lost his momentum and allowed another run in the second inning. However,
he remained scoreless in his next three innings and completed his five innings with six strike-outs.
Mike Stanton singled in the sixth and then in the eighth to help his club to make their position strong over the game. Omer Infante scored a second RBI of the game to elevate the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Until now, the Marlins’ reliever Edward Mujica, Randy Choate and Burke Badenhop kept the Angels scoreless. Each of these pitchers however allowed one hit except Choate who allowed one walk while Badenhop also took two batters.
In the top of the ninth inning though, their closer Jose Ceda gave away two runs, one each to Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu.
"We didn't come through in the clutch situations," Hunter said. "That's why we lost. We got hits but not at the right moment."
Leo Nunez went for just eleven pitches and saved his 20th game of the season.
