Florida Panthers stay hot with fifth straight over Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 -NHL Update
Florida Panthers stayed hot and showed that they can take down some of the top teams when needed, edging Philadelphia Flyers, 2-1, on Tuesday night, March 20, 2012, at the sold-out Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Surprisingly, Florida had only 13 attempts in total throughout the 60-minute contest, giving full credit of the win to Panthers goalie, Scott Clemmensen, as he blocked 35 of 36 shots on his net along with denying Philadelphia a single goal on four power
play opportunities.
"I was fortunate to get a couple of saves under my belt, and I just went from there," Clemmensen said. "For me, it's a matter of getting into my comfort zone, getting into a flow. Certainly, experience helps you at this time of year, but it's never easy
in this building. We'll definitely take this."
Stephen Weiss got the first of the night for his 18th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season 13:04 into the opener. Florida, amazingly managed to kill all four penalties given in the first 20 minutes without a single goal
from Philadelphia.
"I thought we came out a little bit sleepy in the second period for a few minutes," Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "They caught a really nice break off the carom off the glass. After that, I think we got back to work."
Sean Bergenheim took advantage of their first added man advantage with Jaromir Jagr out for hooking while Eric Wellwood capped the match off with Philadelphia’s first and only of the night.
Florida failed to add anymore in the final period, as did Flyers, giving Panthers an easy win.
Panthers head coach, Kevin Dineen, definitely made a tough choice to rest Jose Theodore, the veteran goalie who had lifted Florida to their previous four straight victories and played Scott Clemmensen instead to get him in the flow.
Philadelphia can expect to down Washington Capitals when the two meet on Thursday while Florida has managed to keep on extending their South Eastern lead with 85 points now and are set to dominate Carolina Hurricanes in their next contest on Wednesday.
