If you're going by the southern route, White Sands National Park near Alamogordo, NM is worth seeing. Think of a beautiful white beach full of sand but no water. Carlsbad Caverns draws tourists from all over the world and the special tours (cost extra) to the Kings Cavern or Queens Cavern are worth it, especially when they sit you down on benches and turn out the lights. It's amazing.

Northern New Mexico has a beautiful artists' colony in Taos. Of course, our state capitol is one big artists' colony.
