Is there a strainer on the connection in the lake? Have you installed a Check Valve to prevent backflow once the pump stops running, otherwise each time the lift is from where the water enters the inlet, with the valve the water is heald (as long as NO cracks in the piping). Have you verified that NO leaks exist between the Pump and the inlet? Otherwise it is like sucking on a straw that has a hole and you won't get much product.

If you remove the water inlet and run the pump (Briefly) do you feel a suction?
