  1. Plants that flower this way are referred to as mast flowering or gregarious flowering meaning they have periodic pulses of coordinated flowering. These plants take several years to gather resources to flower in synchrony over a large area. Plietesial plants are similar, they grow for a number of years, flower gregariously, but then set seed and die where the other that mast repeat their cycle.

    For mast flowering plants there are the Strobilanthes. Specifically the Kurinji flower (Strobilanthes kunthianus) bloom only once in 12 years (last one in 2006). Other members of the genus share the strategy and flowering cycles range from annual to 16 year periods. Many seem to be plietesial flowering
