  1. Open headers are illegal due to the noise and pollution control regs. Besides with open headers the valves are subject to sudden temp changes as cold air pours in when the engine is shut down. The sudden influx of cold air will warp the valves and ruin the engine. Flowmasters are the way to go but better check on the NY regs. When I was stationed in NY State in the Air Force they were very, very strict about what exhaust you could run. A state trooper tried to write me a ticket for a non stock muffler on an old car I had restored. I had to take him to the parts store where I had purchased it and proved it was a stock muffler.

  2. Open headers are probably illegal in New York (check first).

I've heard that open headers can cause engine problems also. Plus, it will make everyone who enjoys peace and quiet angry.

  3. open headers depending on how they are set up can absolutly cause issues,a certain amount of backpressure is GOOD for your motor, and its why "tuned headers " are bent accordingly as the bends create backpressure, specific to the motor at hand.
