Floyd Mayweather: I always turn a negative into a positive – Boxing News
American unbeaten fighter Floyd Mayweather is heading towards fighting Miguel Cotto tomorrow, May 4, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight is currently being considered the biggest boxing event of 2012. In addition, this will be Mayweather’s last fight
before he starts his 90-day jail sentence.
Mayweather will commence the sentence on June 1 and will be freed by the end of August. Speculations of Mayweather’s next opponent are already in the air but nothing has been decided yet. On one end, Manny Pacquiao, the current WBO welterweight champion
from the Philippines, is a hot topic of debate for a super-bout against Mayweather. On the other hand, former IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan is eager to face Mayweather next after his rematch against Lamont Peterson on May 19 at the Mandalay
Bay in Las Vegas.
When asked about his jail sentence, Mayweather iterated, “Even when I go away, the only thing it can do is make me grow mentally stronger for who ever I fight next. It is all part of life. You take the good with the bad and the bad with the good. There are
certain obstacles that get in your way, but you have to remain strong. Ask my family and those closest. They will always tell you I turn a negative into a positive. Many of my opponents have found that out already.”
There are speculations that Khan may fight Khan by autumn. Also, some close to Mayweather are also of the view that the WBC champion will serve half of his sentence before facing Khan and half of it after the fight. However, no official announcement regarding
Khan’s fight against Mayweather has been made.
For now, Mayweather is all ready to give his best against Cotto tomorrow. According to Mayweather, Cotto is not an easy fighter and it might be difficult for him to take the Puerto Rican down especially via knockout. On the other hand, Cotto revealed that
he will step in the ring against Mayweather with multiple strategies in his mind since handling Mayweather is not as easy as it sounds.
