Floyd Mayweather Jr. gets license for fight against Miguel Cotto on May 5 – Boxing news
Floyd Mayweather Jr. appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday to plead for fighting license for his May 5 fight, which by now is set with Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
It should be noted here that this is a conditional license only subjected to the May 5 fight before the unbeaten makes a visit to jail for his 90-day sentence. The announcement of Mayweather vs. Cotto after the hearing puts an end to all the speculations
regarding a possible Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight.
Mayweather is currently a five-division world champion while Cotto is the WBA (Super) light middleweight champion. Mayweather has 42 wins, 0 losses and 26 knockouts in his portfolio while Cotto has bagged 37 victories, 2 losses and 30 knockouts by now. Mayweather
is an unbeaten fighter even though he has fought 42 bouts.
On the possibility of a bout with Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather asserted, “I presented Pacquiao with the fight. Pacquiao is blowing a lot of smoke. ... He doesn't really want to fight. I gave him a chance to step up to the plate. We're talking about a $10 million
fighter that I tried to give $40 million to. We didn't even talk about the back end.”
By last year, Mayweather was the one who was not paying much heed to the bout with Pacquiao but now it seems like he is more interested than Manny.
Manny Pacquiao on the other hand has said that Mayweather was not being reasonable which ticked him off. According to Manny, Mayweather offered him a 60/40 split, with 60 being bagged by Mayweather and 40 for Manny, which he denied to.
Mayweather even went ahead to call up Manny last week to discuss the possibilities of the fight with him. Both the superstars spoke about it but Manny eventually refused to fight saying that it should be a 50/50 split between both the fighters.
Bob Arum, Manny’s promoter, has said that the fight might happen in November since fans of both the fighters are eagerly waiting for it.
For now, it is Mayweather vs. Cotto which is equally as interesting as a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao bout.
