Floyd Mayweather Jr. refuses Manny Pacquiao, sets up Victor Ortiz clash in September – Boxing news
The undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather has chosen the World Boxing Council’s welterweight champion Victor Ortiz after his long awaited return and has announced September 17, 2011 as an official date for the bout.
However, the venue of the fight is still to be decided.
Floyd ‘The Pretty Boy’ Mayweather told the media he is very delighted with the fight. He stated every time he fights, he sees people making different statements and excuses about his opponent but this time, they should not be making any statements, as he
chose someone who is strong, fast, young and a world champion as well.
He also commented on the southpaws, as everyone reckons the American boxer has difficulties against them. Many even consider this as a reason why Mayweather does not want to face Pacquiao. Mayweather replied by saying he really does not have any problems
with the southpaws or the orthodox. He added he can also take on anyone, even the one who is capable of doing both and can switch.
While speaking on his inclusion, he remarked, “Yeah, I chose Victor Oritz. I mean, there’s always excuses when I fight; they say he’s either too small, he’s too slow or he’s too old. I chose Victor Ortiz, a young, strong, solid champion and I think he brings
excitement to the sport of boxing. You know, they say that I have a hard time with southpaws, but last time I checked, I was 41-0, so I don’t think I really have too many problems with orthodox or southpaw, or a guy that can do both and can switch. Victor
Ortiz is strong, he’s solid, and he’s the world champion.”
Mayweather recently refused a staggering $65 million offer to face Manny Pacquiao and thus was criticised a lot. Manny’s coach, Freddie Roach, was especially angry on it and said every time Mayweather successfully gets away because he knows he will lose
against Manny Pacquiao.
However, Roach now believes Mayweather has taken up Ortiz because he wants to practice for Manny Pacquiao. Roach told the media that Ortiz has almost the same style as of Pacquiao and therefore he thinks Mayweather would get help before stepping up against
one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
