Floyd Mayweather - Plunged in arrogance or is he really the one?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. – a name that defines the world of boxing today – has remained unbeaten to date. He has stepped in the ring 42 times and has won every time. He currently holds the WBC welterweight title and is the most revenue generating boxing superstar
today. With all these accomplishments, no one can deny the fact that indeed Floyd Mayweather has done it all. However, does all of this give him the right to throw off his weight around and trash-talk about other greats such as Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and
the like? Probably not, but that is how great boxers have made them in history.
Before Floyd, there was Muhammad Ali ‘The Greatest’, who was known for having a ‘big mouth’. Back in those days, Ali was criticized for trash talking against some of the most reputable fighters such as Joe Frazier and George Foreman. However, Ali absorbed
all that criticism because he knew that somewhere along the lines controversies would bring him fame. Eventually, it did happen and Ali became the Greatest of all times.
Is it the same case with Mayweather too? Yes, to a certain extent. Mayweather has spoken about NBA superstar Jeremy Lin, passing racism comments on him. He has been a racist towards the Filipino WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao too. However, yet
he is considered to be the best boxer who lives today.
Recently, Floyd’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe said, “This is all history. Floyd Mayweather will go down, in my eyes, as the greatest to ever do it. Obviously, Floyd is just unbelievable and with him being the most talented guys out there, and working harder
than everybody, he really hasn’t had to come out with his bag of tricks but he’s working like his nineteen years old. His work ethic is unbelievable and I fully expect that all the work that he puts into this, the fans will really get a kick out of this next
Saturday. Everybody, when they come to Vegas, wants to train here at the Mayweather Boxing Club.”
Ellerbe even said that most young aspiring boxers come to the gym to take tips and get inspired by the environment, which has an aura of Mayweather.
On the other hand, Mayweather himself said that he has accomplished all and that the most awaited mega-bout against Pacquiao is something he does not need to prove himself but the Filipino needs it. In his recent interview, Mayweather said that he wants
to fight Pacquiao but he is not dying for it and that if it happens it is good but if it does not happen, he is least bothered about it.
Probably, Mayweather thinks he is the best of all times and it gives him the right to be arrogant towards others. With all his accomplishments and records, he definitely has the right to call himself the best there is in the business. Maybe this is the way
he wants to keep his image, following the footsteps of ‘The Greatest’. If Floyd actually retires unbeaten then definitely he will be remembered as one fighter who never bowed down or gave up in the ring, no matter who is opponent was.
Mayweather will be facing Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, a match that will probably his career’s toughest and can get him the first defeat of his career. Hence, if this happens, his arrogance might end.
