Floyd Mayweather Sr. claims Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s win over Victor Ortiz was legal – Boxing news
Floyd Mayweather senior, who is the father and former trainer of the five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather, has claimed his son’s win over Victor Ortiz was completely legitimate.
The 34-year-old Mayweather junior knocked out Vicious Victor Ortiz very smartly in the fourth round at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on September 17, 2011.
The 24-year-old Ortiz intentionally head-butted Mayweather junior in the earlier stages of the fourth round due to which referee Joe Cortez deducted his one point. However, when the fight was reset Ortiz, went on to hug Mayweather as an apology. Mayweather
allowed him to hug but launched a left-right combination punch which knocked Ortiz out.
Critics believe the punch from Mayweather was legitimate. Moreover, many people think the fight was fixed.
Therefore, Mayweather senior has responded to all the critics. He admitted many people think his son’s fight was fixed but on the same note he stated when the referee signals for a fight, a boxer should protect himself instead of keep his gloves down.
Mayweather senior in the end added it was Ortiz who started it by head-butting his son.
“The fight was a legitimate fight. Everybody is trying to say that the fight was fixed or whatever they’re trying to say about it. There is no question when the referee says, the last the referee tells you is, “Protect yourself at all times!” he said.
“You already bumped gloves. There’s no need to bump gloves. It’s time to fight! Everybody’s got this thing all twisted like little Floyd stole on him. First of all, he was the first one that started the mess by head-butting little Floyd. He’s the one tha
started it, anyway! Little Floyd just ended it. That’s all that was,” Mayweather senior told On the Ropes Boxing Radio.
