Floyd Mayweather Sr. hospitalized due to chest pains
Floyd Mayweather Sr., former fighter and trainer of "Pretty Boy Floyd" Mayweather Jr., has been hospitalized in Las Vegas following chest pains, reports Brad Cooney of 8CountNews.
The legendary boxing trainer and proclaimed “Poet Laureate” of boxing experienced severe pains that travelled from his ribs to his upper chest this weekend, prompting him finally to have the issue medically examined. Mayweather has been at the hospital
since, waiting for information following many tests.
"They think it may be something to do with my heart,” Mayweather said. “You know I have this lung issue, and we believe it's tied into that. They have completed a lot of tests on me, and I have some more."
For years Mayweather Sr. has been suffering from sarcoidosis, which can affect many organs in the body. The disease consists of inflammatory cells forming as nodules on organs, the most frequent of which are the lungs.
Mayweather, while distinguished as a fighter in the ring, is more noted for providing the boxing building blocks for Mayweather Jr., whom he trained until a rift compelled “Money” to fire his father.
Mayweather Sr. is credited for teaching Mayweather Jr. how to box as a child, and praising the jab, and a sound defence-over-an-offence approach to fighting.
A falling-out with Mayweather Jr. reached a high point when Mayweather Sr. agreed to train Oscar De la Hoya in a fight against his son, but demanded a $2 million fee to do so. De la Hoya eventually overlooked Mayweather Sr. for Freddie Roach.
Developments regarding Mayweather Sr.’s health are significant because they could affect the possibility of a future super-bout between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Boxing’s biggest promoters, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Inc., have been trying to secure the bout for the better part of two years. It would figure to be the highest grossing fight in the history of the sport.
