Floyd Mayweather defeats Miguel Cotto via 12-round unanimous decision – Boxing News
Boxing was at its best when Floyd Mayweather went head to head with Miguel Cotto on Saturday night, May 5, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Surprisingly, Miguel Cotto was way more competitive than Mayweather thought. Floyd wanted to knock him out but he was
resilient than ever. Cotto dragged the fight to the 12 round, making it difficult for the unbeaten to gauge his steps. Even though Mayweather made it to the mark, Cotto still proved his point that he was the toughest opponent for Mayweather in his career.
In the initial six rounds, Mayweather dominated the fight, however in the later rounds, Cotto came on top. Unexpectedly, Mayweather was the one who bled from his nose and mouth. Round 8 was the gruesome one when Cotto unleashed a spree of uppercuts and body
shots to knockout Mayweather. This attack from Cotto was something Mayweather has never faced in his career and so he was left startled. Somehow, the unbeaten American survived the game and that was it. Round eight was all Cotto had to give and from then on
Mayweather dominated again. The final scores of the fight were 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110.
After the fight, Mayweather spoke about the fight. He said, “Tonight we gave the fans what they wanted to see. We matched the best with the best. Cotto was a very tough competitor and he won some rounds. He pushed me to the limits and this is what it’s all
about. Miguel Cotto fought his a*s off tonight and I want to congratulate him and his team. You’ve seen me in flashy cars, but I want you to know that I do give back to the community. This is what it’s all about. It’s not about making a lot of money. It’s
about giving back. I don’t want be on TV and not give you guys [the fans and media] what you deserve.”
At the end, Mayweather was successful, but at least Cotto has the honour of making the so-called ‘invincible’ bleed and stagger. Cotto might get a rematch to regain his title but victory is still in doubt for him.
