Floyd Mayweather defeats Victor Ortiz via a controversial fourth-round knockout – Boxing news
The Pretty Boy, Floyd Mayweather, knocked out Victor ‘the Vicious’ Ortiz in the fourth round to clinch the WBC World Welterweight title last Saturday night on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
However, for many who were watching the fight, it was a very controversial knockout win for Mayweather.
In the early stages of the fourth round, Ortiz gave Mayweather an illegal head-butt for which he was docked a point but when the fight started again Ortiz felt giving his opponent a hug to show everyone he is sorry, which was a typical mistake from the 24-year-old.
The experienced Mayweather, who is a five division-world champion and now the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, let Ortiz hug him and when this was happening, he unleashed his left hook followed by another dazzling right hand which
knocked out Ortiz.
It was another mistake from Ortiz, as instead of protecting himself after taking the first punch he looked at the referee to see if the punch was illegal and in the meanwhile, Mayweather knocked him out.
The undefeated American legend, Mayweather, who now holds a record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, afterwards commented on his fight.
Mayweather stated he did everything within the rules, as he believes a boxer is supposed to protect himself all the time when he is in the ring.
Mayweather said, “In the ring, you have to protect yourself at all times. After it happened, we touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left hook and right hand after the break. You just gotta protect yourself at all times.”
He also commented on the head-butt which he received earlier in the round.
“What goes around comes around,” he said.
The referee, Joe Cortez, also shared his thoughts with the media. He said Mayweather did nothing illegal as the time was in and Ortiz should have kept his guard up.
“Time was in,” Cortez told ESPN’s Dan Rafael. “The fighter needed to keep his guard up. Mayweather did nothing illegal.”
